Dental health is a very important for the overall health of our patients. Bad breath and staining teeth are a few of the signs that your pet might be in need of a dental cleaning. Animals with poor dental health are at risk for problems like periodontal disease and gingivitis; which could lead to even bigger problems such as kidney, liver and heart disease. The American Veterinary Dental Society estimates that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three. If you are unsure if your pet may be having dental problems here are a few symptoms to look for:
If your pet is showing any symptoms of dental disease, please call our office to set up a physical exam. One of our veterinarians will do a complete exam including a full dental exam. Once our doctors have established the dental issues your pet has, a dental health plan is put into place. Some animals require a dental cleaning which is when we put the animal under general anesthesia to clean their teeth. Once your pet is under anesthesia, our doctors can take a better look at your pets mouth. We clean all the plaque and tartar off the teeth using a ultrasonic hand scaler, and determine if any teeth need further investigating. If a tooth looks questionable x-rays are taken to determine if the tooth should be extracted. Animals going under anesthesia get dropped off at the clinic between 7:30am to 8:30am and should be able to go home between 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
During the month of February we send all dental patients home with a free dental health bag that includes samples of dental formulated diets and treats that have been proven benefits in plaque and tartar removal. You will also receive a discount off your dental cleaning as well as some other goodies.
Please call our office to set up your pets dental exam, our staff would be more than happy to assist you.
